We find all sorts of ways to introduce everyone to the wonders and science of the natural world, which is why we’ve enlisted the Little Spotted Kiwi to help us with our fall Annual Fund appeal.
Did you know that this little bird, found only in New Zealand, lays one egg at a time that accounts for 26 percent of its own body weight? And here is some good news: After 20 years of concerted effort by naturalists, scientists, and concerned citizens, the Little Spotted Kiwi has been down listed from Threatened for extinction to Near Threatened. That’s no small feat!
As the year comes to a close, please consider making an investment in the future with a tax-deductible contribution to our Annual Fund. Every single bit counts and I know your gift will make a difference.
How so? Well, for one thing, today’s students must be ready to compete in careers that require strong abilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM subjects. Schools, teachers, and parents need every available resource to make this happen. The Delaware Museum of Natural History is one of these important resources.
Since January 2011, the Museum has seen:
· 9,613 elementary and pre-school students participate in field trips and outreaches · 1,554 children participate in summer and holiday camps, Scout and homeschool programs, and special classes for pre-school children · 74 college and high school volunteers gain practical experience · 2 “PNC Free Sunday Mornings” and 5 “Artisans’ Bank Dollar Tuesdays” · Scientists from around the world gather data from our collections · 64,000 visitors (and counting!)
On your next visit to the Museum, don’t forget to view the Little Spotted Kiwi and its relatives on display in their native habitat. Kiwis nest in a burrow under ground. Amazing!
With your help, we can inspire the next generation of scientists, naturalists, and good stewards of our planet.
