 Assistant Summer Camp Coordinator (Seasonal/Temporary)

The Delaware Museum of Natural History is located in the culturally rich Brandywine Valley of Wilmington, Delaware.  As part of its mission to “investigate nature and science, preserve and interpret our collections, conduct scientific research, and inspire people of all ages to a lifetime of exploration and discovery” the Museum seeks an Assistant Summer Camp Coordinator for the 2017 Summer Camp program.  Applicants must be able to organize and facilitate an educational, engaging and enjoyable experience for children ages 3 to 12 years old, and assist the Scout & Camp Coordinator with the supervision of the camp staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the summer camp staff, programming and camp related responsibilities in the  absence and/or at the request of the Scout & Camp Coordinator
  • Organize and lead camp lessons, crafts and activities
  • Identify and respond appropriately to camper behavior issues. Refer when appropriate and/or necessary to the Scout & Camp Coordinator
  • Set-up for and clean-up after camp activities, and maintain cleanliness of the Museum areas used  for camp programming
  • Maintain accurate records including incident reports, sign-in/sign-out sheets, and daily attendance
  • Learn and enforce all emergency procedures and safety guidelines associated with the camp program
  • First aid, CPR and defibrillator training and certification required (DMNH provided)
  • Attend required camp staff meetings and training as required or requested

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing or have earned a Bachelor’s degree in education, science, natural history, or museum studies
  • Experience as a summer camp leader and/or educator in a formal or informal setting
  • Available for a minimum of nine (9) of the ten (10) weeks of summer camp (June 12th – August 18th)
  • Knowledge of natural history
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously as a team
  • Proven ability to be a leader, dependable, flexible, creative, self-directed, and resourceful
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Ability to relate to and engage with children of various educational levels and diverse backgrounds

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday schedule. Hours will vary based on before and after care needs (9:30am –5:30pm or 8:00am to 4:00pm)

Visitor Services Assistant (part-time)

The Delaware Museum of Natural History (“DMNH”), located in the culturally rich Brandywine Valley of Wilmington, Delaware seeks a part-time Visitor Services Assistant.  DMNH opened in 1972 and is the only natural history museum in the state. DMNH houses world-renowned scientific collections, presents engaging natural history exhibits, and offers a variety of educational and public programs to excite and inform people about the natural world through exploration and discovery.

The Visitor Services staff provides a professional and welcoming presence and serves as a representative for the Museum.  The primary responsibilities are to staff the reception/admission desk, complete Museum store sales transactions, and secure the galleries to provide a security presence safeguarding exhibits and visitors.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or the equivalent
  • Outgoing, positive attitude and enthusiasm for working with the public and especially children
  • 1-2 years of retail experience, preferably in a museum or specialty store
  • Security and/or Visitor Services experience a plus
  • Accurate cash handling skills
  • Ability and a willingness to learn the opening and closing procedures for the Museum’s public areas,  including exhibits
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of or interest in natural history
  • Ability to stand and walk 75%-80% of each work shift
  • First aid, CPR, and AED certified or willingness to become certified

Special Requirement:

This part time position is primarily for one weekend day or evening event per week and to fill in for vacations and/or illnesses.  Additional shifts may be available during peak volume times and/or to fill in for vacations and holidays.
